Molluscum

Also known as ‘water warts’, molluscum contagiosum is a common childhood skin condition caused by the pox virus. Infection is passed through direct contact or via objects that have come into contact with the lesions, for example shared bath towels. It is extremely common among small children in daycare or school as it is very easily spread. Molluscum commonly flares in the same areas of the skin that are affected by eczema as this skin tends to be scratched allowing the virus to penetrate the skin in these areas. Molluscum contagiosum is typically treated the same way as warts, and may need multiple treatments. However, molluscum can resolve on its own but it can take months to even years. It can be itchy and bothersome to your child, which is why we recommend treating them in certain cases.
