Fungal Infections

Fungal infections are very common. They are caused by fungal organisms, also known as tinea or dermatophytes.  These organisms cause ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch.  When fungus infects the skin, it mostly grows near the skin’s surface where it causes red scaling patches that can itch.  Depending on the location and extent of your fungal infection, topical or oral antifungal medications may be prescribed to clear it.
