Laser Skin Resurfacing

Genetics, age, and sun exposure are just a few of the factors that can contribute to skin concerns such as wrinkles, dark spots, and uneven skin tone and texture. These concerns affect many men and women, and can detract from a person’s natural beauty.  Skin resurfacing is a proven method of skin rejuvenation that can address a wide range of skin issues, and here at DermWorksTM, we offer a variety of skin resurfacing treatments.

What is Skin Resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing is the process of creating tiny injuries in the skin that stimulate the dermis to produce more collagen, which leads in turn to plumper, firmer skin with a more even skin tone.  There are different types of skin resurfacing, including laser skin resurfacing, microneedling, and radiofrequency energy.  Each type of skin resurfacing can help address different issues, and each patient will receive a custom treatment plan that takes into account their goals and skin type.

Types of Skin Resurfacing

Microneedling

Microneedling is the latest form of skin resurfacing.  It uses tiny needles to create microscopic channels in the skin which help topical solutions penetrate deeper and work more effectively.  In addition, microneedling stimulates collagen production, which plumps the skin and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars. Microneedling can also help to reduce the appearance of age spots.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser technology has long been used to help rejuvenate and renew the skin. There are many different kinds of lasers that can be used for resurfacing, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.  Some lasers work aggressively and produce dramatic results after just one session, but require a lengthy recovery period.  Other lasers are more gentle and may require multiple sessions for full results, but they do not require much downtime.  Dr. Queller works with each of her patients to find the right laser for their skin and lifestyle.

Fraxel Dual

The Fraxel Dual is a relatively gentle laser that is great for targeting dark spots on the skin. Fraxel Dual is a great choice for comprehensive skin rejuvenation, as it can smooth fine lines and wrinkles, even skin tone and texture, and address dark spots and pigmentation problems.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

A full laser resurfacing means the entire surface area of the skin is treated.  A laser beam is scanned across the treatment area and precisely removes a layer of skin. The body will naturally replace the old, damaged skin that was removed, with a fresh, healthy layer.  Treatments can range from superficial/shallow depths which may be appropriate for eliminating fine lines, sun spots and tired-looking skin to deep which is often used to improve skin tone/texture and eliminate deep wrinkles, even in difficult areas like upper lip lines and the side of the cheeks.

In fractional resurfacing, only narrow channels of tissue are removed which stimulates new collagen and elastin, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact for rapid healing.  This laser is used to reduce fine lines, improve texture, even out skin tone, firm the skin as well as reduce the appearance of scars.

Our fractionated laser is one of the most popular to offer global improvement in skin texture, tone, and fine lines on the face, neck, chest, and hands.  By removing surface skin damage, it treats photoaging, fine lines, poor texture, and acne scarring.

The fractionated laser provides excellent results with less downtime and less discomfort than conventional fully ablative laser resurfacing, without compromising the outcome.  It also offers better results than non-ablative laser treatments that don’t do as much to remove surface skin damage.

What is the Fraxel Dual?

For fresh, bright and tightened skin, the Fraxel Dual is the perfect resurfacing laser for you!  The Fraxel Dual is two lasers in one: a 1927nm wavelength, which allows us to treat the skin superficially, and the 1550nm wavelength intended for skin texture targeting.  The components are used simultaneously or separately and depend on your specific skin care needs.

The Fraxel laser is a precise method of repairing the skin, penetrating deep into the tissue without affecting undesired areas.  Every treatment will target a predetermined percentage of the skin, so a series of treatments is often necessary to achieve the ultimate results.

Fraxel Dual is effective on:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles – like crow’s feet and brow lines
  • Surface scarring – erasing effects of acne and other scarring
  • Pigmentation – minimizing the appearance of age spots
  • Sun damage – helping heal dangerous skin damage
  • Actinic Keratosis (AK) – a common pre-cancerous skin condition

What is the Difference between the Fraxel and Fraxel Dual?

To put it simply, the Fraxel Dual skin resurfacing treatment is more effective in its utilization for brown spots and excess pigmentation than the Fraxel.  Additionally, the improvements made with the advancements in technology to the tip of the laser, the Fraxel Dual is a better skin resurfacing treatment for large areas of skin like the back, chest, arms, and legs.

How Does Fraxel Dual Work?

Fraxel Dual has two wavelengths that can be utilized in the same treatment, allowing for a more comprehensive treatment that can address multiple skin concerns at once. It is especially good for treating dark spots on the skin, whether age spots or hyperpigmentation.  Dark spots tend to show up on the skin as we age as a result of sun exposure, and can make us look older than we really are.  Fraxel Dual is a good way to lighten those dark spots and achieve a smoother, brighter, more youthful complexion.

Fraxel Dual utilizes fractional laser technology to stimulate collagen production and promote new skin growth without damaging surrounding tissue.  It can be used all over the body, not just on the face. If you want to rejuvenate your chest or reduce the appearance of stretch marks, Fraxel Dual can help.

What is a fractionated erbium laser treatment used for?

Fractional erbium laser resurfacing is an anti-aging treatment that refreshes and rejuvenates your appearance.  Fractional laser resurfacing produces significant improvement of acne scars, reverses sun damage, successfully removes superficial wrinkles, increases skin thickness, and improves skin tone and texture.

How does fractionated erbium laser work?

This fractionated ablative laser breaks up its laser beam into a grid of tiny beams that create microscopic injuries to the top layer of skin.  Because only a “fraction” of the skin is treated at one time, healing is more rapid and downtime is less.

The tiny “micro” injuries stimulate new collagen and elastin production for skin remodeling, ultimately  smoothing and evening out skin texture and tone.

Who is a good candidate for fractionated erbium laser?

Patients in good health who desire skin rejuvenation with a shorter recovery period.  It works best for patients with superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles who have sun damage, brown spots and/or acne scars.
